Bayern eyes top spot in Champions League Group, hosts Olympiakos at Home

Given that Bayern Munich will host Olympiakos shortly, taking the Champions League top spot is definitely what is on Pep Guardiola’s mind.

With two games to go, both sides have the same number of points and are at nine each. What is also clear is that both need one point to qualify for the knockout stages too. Yet most people won’t be surprised if Bayern win by a comfortable margin against the Greek champions.

Since Bayern have won eight Champions League games in a row at home, and which includes a 5-1 drubbing of Arsenal, the Bavarians are definitely betting on a similar result. In fact, they have scored at least four goals at home each over the last six games.

If there’s anything that’s true of Bayern, it is that they always try and finish first of their group since this helps them avoid testing clashing in the knockout stages. The last time they failed to do so was when Bordeaux took the top spot in the 2009-10 season.

As for the away fixture against Olympiakos in September, they managed to win it by 3 goals to nothing, thanks to a Muller brace. This was the only loss that the Greek champions suffered in almost 23 games spanning all competitions.

They come into this game fresh as the clash against Panathinaikos was called off due to crowd violence while Bayern faced the same issues when they met Schalke 04 at Gelsenkirchen.

Yet they are to overcome a dismal record against Bundesliga clubs since they’ve only won one out of six games so far, beating Werder Bremen in 2007-08.
